Started in
1991 by Thalassa, and currently produced in association with the
Daughters of Divination, the San Francisco Bay Area Tarot Symposium (SF
BATS) is the oldest continuously produced Tarot even in the country. It
has been the inspiration and/or the model for virtually every large
Tarot-centred gathering in this country for more than a decade. SF BATS is a
daylong event devoted to covering all areas of Tarot and related topics. Many established authors
and teachers use SF BATS as an opportunity to try new and different
approaches and projects as well as polishing existing work. Exhibitions of new (and
often as yet unpublished or privately published) Tarot decks and
artwork are an especially important feature of this event. In addition to providing
networking opportunities and community building for Tarot enthusiasts
of all levels of interest and experience, SF BATS has facilitated or
furthered the careers of several noted Tarot artists, authors, and
teachers, as well as being instrumental in the publication of several
books and decks. Other
highlights of the day include the Tarot Bazaar, which offers a wide
array of Tarot and divination-themed books, decks, and tools for
purchase. The Millard Fillmore Memorial Spiritualist Temple Garage
Sale, a fundraiser for the Daughters of Divination (DoD), offers gently
used books and decks, as well as trinkets of interest and logo
merchandise featuring our mascot, Sparky the Wonder Bat (designed by Joseph Earnest Martin,
the award-winning graphic artist and creator of the Quest Tarot). In addition, readings are
available from many of the presenters, as well as several founding
members of the DoD. You can read
Toni Gilbert’s report (as featured in the Alternative
Journal of Nursing, Issue 8) on her experience at the Spring
2005 San Francisco Bay Area Tarot Symposium here. Thalassa and
the DoD also offer readings, consultations, classes, and events
such as Tarot Tea Parties and divination salons (known as the Tarot
Rumba Lounge) in the San Francisco Bay Area throughout the year. For more
